Floating Apple store wows Singapore

The Covid-19 pandemic may have hit the retail sector hard; but Apple Inc, the first US company to reach a US$2 trillion valuation, is certainly not pushing back in Singapore. Apple Marina Bay Sands, the first Apple Store completely surrounded by water, opened its doors on September 10 in the island nation.  Introducing a unique retail concept at an iconic location, the store looks like a sphere floating on the iridescent Marina Bay, according to a press release from Apple.

Apple Marina Bay Sands is accessed via a 147-foot-long underwater tunnel from the neighbouring shopping center, giving visitors the feeling that they’re entering a floating building. The store offers uninterrupted 360-degree panoramic views of the city and its spectacular skyline. The sphere is a first-of-its-kind, all-glass dome structure that is fully self-supported. The new store is Apple’s third retail location in Singapore.

Designed by architects Foster + Partners, Apple Marina Bay Sands is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, with an oculus located at the apex of the dome providing a flooding ray of light. With trees lining the interior of the dome, the green garden city of Singapore flows into the store, providing additional shade and soft shadows.

Visitors entering the store encounter a dramatic reveal into the massive volume of the dome, where they can explore curated Apple products and accessories, receive personal technical support from staff, or simply take in the stunning view of Marina Bay. The store also has a stage for Today at Apple sessions featuring Singapore’s artists, musicians, and creators. Entrepreneurs and developers interested in receiving training and advice can meet with Apple team members in Apple’s first underwater boardroom, located on the lower level of the store.

The futuristic space is a follow up to the firm’s recently opened Bangkok Apple Store, which is in the form of a tree. Apple is certainly upbeat on ASEAN.
