The President and his administration are focused on economic development and attracting investments

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, 59, is the first elected head of Indonesia from a non-elite, non-military background. Prior to this position he was the Governor of Jakarta. He is acknowledged to be clean, honest and competent. He was elected and sworn in for a second term in 2019.

President Jokowi has packed his cabinet with a mix of technocrats. The Jokowi 2.0 administration recognizes the need to efficiently use natural resources to generate investments and develop the country’s economy. Priorities for 2019-2024 are upgrading education and technology skills, infrastructure development, focus on manufacturing, simplification of the regulatory regime and reforms in bureaucracy and continued commitment to eradicating corruption. Some steps already taken:

1) Introduction of the Omnibus Law

2) Business licensing applications between ministries being expedited, synchronized, and integrated into an Electronic Single Submission System;

3) 16 economic reform packages to stimulate investment released in the last four years;

4) Infrastructure development prioritized including the launch of first phase of Jakarta’s Mass Rapid Transit system in 2019 and construction of the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway.

President Jokowi’s government is pro-actively opening up to foreign investment and trying to attract investors by expanding opportunities including specific schemes for the development of Indonesian natural resources and public infrastructure. The co-ordinating ministry for maritime and investment affairs of Indonesia is prioritising investors willing to join the effort in adding value into Indonesia’s rich raw material resources.
