State-owned multinational oil and gas company Petronas, responsible for the entire oil and gas resources of Malaysia which operates in 35 countries, is the largest corporate entity in Malaysia. Other prominent companies include Shell Malaysia, Nestlé Malaysia, Intel Malaysia, Samsung, AirAsia, IBM and Huawei Technologies Malaysia.
Top industry segments include electronics, semiconductors, microchips, integrated circuits, rubber, oleochemicals, automotive, optical devices, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, smelting, timber, wood pulp, islamic finance, petroleum, liquefied natural gas, petrochemicals and telecommunication products.
The government under the 12th Malaysia Plan, a medium-term spending plan covering 2021-25, is expected to have a stronger focus on reducing the government’s reliance on the oil and gas sector and promoting domestic tourism.
